The Point after Touchdown [PAT] is an attempt at kicking a goal after a touchdown has been scored. It takes place directly in front of goal and is rarely missed. Can we make it more exciting?

I think we can.

American football evolved from rugby where they also give the attacking team a shot on goal after scoring a touchdown (try in rugby).
But in rugby the attempt is made from a spot related to the place at which the try was scored.
This has the effect of making the player scoring the try attempt to get closer into the goal posts so that the ensuing kick can be taken more directly from in front of goal and it means that if the try is scored out wide, the kick is from out wide – making it more difficult, and more exciting.

I believe that this system can be modified for the NFL so that it makes the touchdown more dramatic, and the kick for goal harder.

How would it work?
When a player scores a touchdown, the success is determined by whether the ball has crossed the plane of the goal line. This would remain the case and the attacking team would then take their kick from a place direclty out from the point of scoring. So if the touchdown is scored a yard in from the side lines, then the scrimmage occurs out wide, perhaps 5 yards into the field of play. This means the kicker has a far more difficult shot at goal. See below image.

If the player scoring the touchdown wants to make the ensuing kick easier then he needs to ensure that he crosses the goal line inline with the goals.

In Touchdown A, (TD A), the player scores wide out and the scrimmage occurs related to the point of crossing the goal line. The kick on goal is more difficult due to the increased angle of the kick.

In touchdown B, (TD B), the player scores in the middle of the goal line and the kick on goal takes place directly in front.

I think such a system would make the game more interesting…what do you think?
