The Chiefs flew out of the blocks, piling on three tries in the opening 20 minutes, although Donald missed all the conversions. At 15-0 the game looked over. Then the Reds lifted whilst the Chiefs went to sleep and made a serious of mistakes. With 15 minutes to go, the Reds hit the lead after a sensational kick and chase. The Chiefs tried hard but lacked the punch to win back the lead and it was a shock away win to the Queenslanders.
With rain falling throughout the game, any plans the Brumbies had for running in a flourish of tries went out the window and instead the game was bland and error ridden with the Lions getting offside with the ref early in the game. The score was 3 all after 20 minutes and rarely got any better. No bonus point for either side and the Brumbies will have to be satisfied with the win.
For the first 50 minutes the Blues held the Crusaders well, then the home team pounced on a couple of Blues errors and the game was over. The Crusaders battled hard for the bonus point in the final ten minutes but were unable to get over the line a 4th time.
The Waratahs returned to the winning list with one of their traditionally uninspiring efforts, narrowly defeating the lowly ranked Sharks in Sydney. The visitors will feel robbed by the ref who failed to award a penalty try in the dying seconds, but it was a weekend of odd refereeing behaviour.
In Cape Town, the Stormers romped all over a poor Highlanders outfit who started the season with promised and have slid backwards ever since. The 33-0 scoreline says it all.
The Cheetahs brought up the 2nd major upset of the weekend when they defeated an injury depletedĀ Hurricanes side and threw the Super 14 competition wide open.

After a lacklustre first half, the Crusaders lifted while the Sharks tired and the home side romped ahead for an easy win. A nice intercept try to Guildford broke the game open and the Crusaders were happy to get back onto the winners list.
In a tough, low scoring game, the Brumbies managed to get the vital 4 points with a close win over the Stormers. The Stormers had the chance to snatch a draw after the siren but the conversion attempt failed.
The Hurricanes battled hard to defeat a pumped up Lions in Wellington.
The visitors show a strong desire to throw the ball around but were without lady luck.
As expected, the Chiefs were able to run away with the game against a determined, but undermanned, Force in Perth. The Chiefs again picked up maximum points and finished their road trip in a strong position to challenge for the title this year.
The Queensland Reds euphoria of the past week ended in the soaking rain of Brisbane as they fell to the Blues in a tight, tough match. The Blues will be happy to come away with the 4 points in difficult conditions.
The Highlanders picked up their first win of the season in a scrappy encounter with the Cheetahs. The home side were their worst enemy giving away far too many penalties.
In the match of the round, the Bulls and Waratahs played a high scoring battle with only three points separating the teams as the last ten minutes came up. Then a clever try to the Bulls after some seriously determined work in the Waratahs 22 broke the game open and the Bulls came away with another bonus point win.

The Highlanders, after looking comfortably in charge for the first 50 minutes, saw the game slip away as the Blues had a few lucky bounces and worked hard to hold onto their lead. In a game of shockingly poor kicking for goal, the home side had their chances but made too many mistakes.
The first of the rounds upsets came when the Queensland Reds thumped the Crusaders in a runaway win in Brisbane. The home team built on a small half time lead with fly half Quade Cooper scoring a team record 31 points as they sank the visitors in a shock result.
The shocks then continued with the Cheetahs grabbing their first win of the season over the Sharks in Durban, the Sharks going down narrowly for the second week in a row. The Cheetahs 25-20 win gets them off the bottom of the ladder.
Not to be outdone by the other results, the Lions and Chiefs then put on a record breaking tryfest with a total of 18 tries in a record score of 65-72. The Chiefs took the 4 points for the win, but the Lions showed they know how to score and have potential for a few surprises this season.
An injury depleted Force were no match for the Hurricanes as the game wore on. To the Force’s credit they manage to score their first few tries for the season and battled it out to the end. The Hurricanes picked up the important bonus point.
The Bulls showed they are real contenders for this years title with another convincing victory – this time over the Brumbies. Putting on 50 points and gaining the maximum 5 points for the 2nd week in a row the Bulls showed they are the real goods whilst the Brumbies tried hard but didnt have the overall strength of the home side.
In the final game, the Waratahs reverted to their usual standards and showed their mental weakness by slumping poorly to the Stormers in Cape Town. Reknown for their inability to keep mentally focussed for a whole season, the Waratahs could manage only 2 penalties whilst the Stormers ran in three tries.

Round 1 kicked off with the Blues at home to the Hurricanes and at half time it was the home team looking comfortable and leading 20-12 at the break. Then the Blues went to sleep as the Hurricanes stormed home to win 34-20, including a record breaking 9 penalties.
The Brumbies started their campaign convincingly when they down the force, 24-15 in Perth. The visitors scored three tries to none and the Force never looked likely to run in the major points. It was only the kicking of O’Connor which kept the home side in the match. It looks like being a long season for the boys from Perth.
The Bulls continued where they left off last year with a scintillating win over the Cheetahs in a high scoring try fest. With 9 tries being scored, it was great entertainment for the crowd and the champions ensured they started the season with maximum points.
The Highlanders kept in touch with the Crusaders for most of this game but a few unlucky moments in the dying minutes and the home side swept clear.
This was a hard slog of a game with the Reds in command throughout, only conceding the match winning in the final minutes. A positive start to the season for the tome team.
As predicted the Stormers had the measure of the Lions in a game that could have been a battle for the wooden spoon.
The final game of round 1 had a fantastic ending. The Sharks looked comfortable at 15-9 going into the last ten minutes, then a late try to the Chiefs saw them move ahead 16-15. The sharks replied immediately with a penalty to take back the lead and with only a minute left looked to have the game. Then as the clock ran out the Sharks gave away a penalty and watch in despair as the Chiefs grabbed the 3 points and the win.
So what did we learn from Round 1 of the Super 14 2010? We saw that the Bulls are still in high form, and the Crusaders look the goods again. Queensland and the Highlanders look to have improved and the ACT and Hurricanes should be up there in the mix. The Force, Cheetahs and Lions look like they will fight it out for the wooden spoon.

In 2011, the Super Rugby expansion continues with the Super 14 expanding to become a Super 15 with a Melbourne based team taking up the 15th franchise.
Finally, a little imagination and standardisation will occur with the competition split into three conferences, something promoted here for the past decade.
Teams will play home and away against each team in their conference and then play 4 of the teams in the other two conferences. The top two teams in each conference will make the playoffs.
Super Rugby will take a better step forward in 2011.

The Bulls demolished the Chiefs in a one sided Super 14 final in Pretoria when they ran in 8 tries to give the visitors a 61- 17 thrashing.
It gives the Bulls their second Super 14 title and the score was a record for a Super 14 final.
Congratulations to the Bulls.

The Super 14 final for 2009 will see the Bulls hosting the Chiefs after the semi final results went according to plan.
The Chiefs slugged it out against the Hurricanes and won 14 -10 to book their place, then they had to sit back and wait to see if they were jetting off to South Africa or playing at home in the final.
The Bulls wrapped up the home final when they defeated the Crusaders, 36-23.
We look forward to a great final next weekend.
