The Chiefs flew out of the blocks, piling on three tries in the opening 20 minutes, although Donald missed all the conversions. At 15-0 the game looked over. Then the Reds lifted whilst the Chiefs went to sleep and made a serious of mistakes. With 15 minutes to go, the Reds hit the lead after a sensational kick and chase. The Chiefs tried hard but lacked the punch to win back the lead and it was a shock away win to the Queenslanders.
With rain falling throughout the game, any plans the Brumbies had for running in a flourish of tries went out the window and instead the game was bland and error ridden with the Lions getting offside with the ref early in the game. The score was 3 all after 20 minutes and rarely got any better. No bonus point for either side and the Brumbies will have to be satisfied with the win.
For the first 50 minutes the Blues held the Crusaders well, then the home team pounced on a couple of Blues errors and the game was over. The Crusaders battled hard for the bonus point in the final ten minutes but were unable to get over the line a 4th time.
The Waratahs returned to the winning list with one of their traditionally uninspiring efforts, narrowly defeating the lowly ranked Sharks in Sydney. The visitors will feel robbed by the ref who failed to award a penalty try in the dying seconds, but it was a weekend of odd refereeing behaviour.
In Cape Town, the Stormers romped all over a poor Highlanders outfit who started the season with promised and have slid backwards ever since. The 33-0 scoreline says it all.
The Cheetahs brought up the 2nd major upset of the weekend when they defeated an injury depleted Hurricanes side and threw the Super 14 competition wide open.
