We have taken ten major international team events, reflecting a wide range of major team sports and ranked nations according to their performance across those sports.
At the end of each December we will draw a line in the sand and declare who the leading sporting nation is at that moment in time.
As you can see below, the top ranked sporting nation in the world at the end of December 2011 is Spain, followed by the USA, 2nd and France and the Netherlands tied on 3rd.
Interestingly, no nation appears in the top rankings for all ten sports, although the US appears in 8 of them.
